Innovation to strengthen family farming: WTT takes part in different spaces for dialogue and policy development focused on family farming, agroecology and food security

Family farming has been at the center of several spaces for dialogue in which WTT has participated in recent weeks. Through meetings, workshops and gatherings, the organization has contributed to discussions on public policies, science, technology and innovation and how they can help strengthen the people who produce food in their territories.

The agenda included the 32nd Ordinary Meeting of the National Commission for Agroecology and Organic Production (CNAPO), the Public Innovation and Social Innovation Workshop for Food Sovereignty and Security, the 1st Preparatory Workshop for the National Seminar of the Healthy Food Economic Complex for Food Sovereignty and Security (CEASSAN) and the Digital Agriculture Week.

What these spaces shared was a range of perspectives on the challenges and possibilities for a stronger, more innovative family farming sector connected to its territories.

Public policies for family farming and agroecology

At the 32nd Ordinary Meeting of CNAPO, WTT followed discussions on public policies for innovation in family farming and agroecology. The meeting also marked the launch of the document “Family Farming in the Just Transition of Agrifood Systems: Contributions to the COP30 Roadmaps”, as well as discussions related to the MAPEAR Project.

Civil society participation is an important part of this process, helping bring public policy development closer to the experiences and needs of the territories.

Public and social innovation for more sustainable food systems

The Public Innovation and Social Innovation Workshop for Food Sovereignty and Security, organized by Embrapa, brought together representatives from government, social movements, academia, international organizations and other institutions.

The meeting focused on developing guidelines to inform Embrapa’s policies, projects and actions aimed at building more sustainable, inclusive and resilient food systems.

WTT’s participation is part of the Technical Cooperation Agreement between WTT and Embrapa, which brings science, technology and innovation closer to the challenges related to family farming and food security.

Innovation is also interdisciplinary

At the 1st Preparatory Workshop for the National Seminar of CEASSAN, discussions focused on the relationship between innovation, public policies and food and nutrition security.

The meeting aimed to collectively develop the proposed program for the National Seminar of the Healthy Food Economic Complex for Food Sovereignty and Security.

It was also a space for bringing together different forms of knowledge, public management and the realities of the territories.

Science, technology and innovation in the field

The agenda was also connected to Digital Agriculture Week, a joint initiative of Embrapa Digital Agriculture and the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) in Brazil.

The event brought together public and private institutions, academia and the productive sector to discuss agricultural digitalization and its possibilities for the sector, in connection with the Digital Agriculture Week promoted by IICA in Costa Rica.

For WTT, being part of these spaces is part of an agenda that recognizes science, technology and innovation as important tools for addressing the challenges facing family farming and building more sustainable food systems.

Knowledge also needs to circulate

The meetings were also an opportunity to present Viveiros de Inovação Transformadora, an initiative that brings together content, experiences and knowledge on innovation in family farming.

The digital repository seeks to connect different experiences and forms of knowledge, helping solutions and lessons learned circulate among people and organizations working in the territories.
